What are manual chain hoists used for?

Manual chain hoists are used for lifting, moving and positioning heavy loads. They’re generally used to lift or transport objects that:

• Can’t be lifted or otherwise accessed by larger items of lifting equipment, including cranes
• Are too heavy, bulky or otherwise impractical to be manually lifted by personnel
• Require a precise and stable vertical lift; for example, lifting an engine out of a car
• Require limited handling; for example, hazardous materials or consumable products

Using a manual chain hoist

To get started, inspect the manual chain hoist for any signs of wear and tear that may affect its ability to function as intended. This includes erosion, cracks, missing components or any other signs of damage.

Once the hoist has been cleared for use, attach it to a suitable lifting point – such as a  lifting beam or jib crane – and set the rig to the required height & positioning in reference to the load. Inspect and clear the lifting path for use to ensure a safe and unobstructed lift.

Once the lifting path has been cleared for use, attach the hook on the end of the load chain to a suitable attachment point on the load. Use the hand chain to lift the load, ensuring the lift is completed in a steady and purposeful manner. Lift the load to the desired height, before using the hoist break to secure the load.

To release the load, firmly grasp the chain before removing the hoist break and slowly lowering the load back into the desired position. Once the load has been successfully lowered, dislodge the hook from the load and dismantle the rig.
